RadioSEGA is 7!

Happy birthday to us! Your favourite SEGA radio station is celebrating this month, why not join in with us?

Seven years old. Wow. It doesn't seem like it's been that long since SEGAMark brought this site into being, and yet it was.

Back in March of 2006, RadioSEGA was called MySEGA Radio, although it very quickly got a rebrand to RadioSEGA. Our website didn't look too fancy back then, in fact it looked a little bit like this (do excuse the lack of background graphics, it seems Wayback Machine doesn't archive those).

RS staples like our request system were seen as a groundbreaking new feature for the site in 2007, called You Control RadioSEGA as seen in that above link, although there were very, very early plans for live shows. Still, the site needed a bit more...substance.

Welcome RadioSEGA 2.0 (again, apologies for the lack of images). Launching on 1st July 2007, this is the version of the site introduced more of our popular features, including Game of the Month (returning soon, btw), and a web player! We also unveiled soundtrack downloads, which allowed you to take your favourite tracks with you, wherever you went! This version of the site also had a NiGHTS theme during Christmas time, which unfortunately doesn't seem to have been tracked.

RS3 was uncovered in late 2008, dropping the orange and blue colour scheme for something a bit more...white. There's also quite a few bits in there that we've since kept, the colour coded sections being one of them. This was also one of the last designs to feature a link to MySEGA, Mark's personal SEGA blog (since removed).

We actually stuck with this design for a while, with a slight fourth variation which moved GotM underneath the latest forum posts and Playlist requests. The next big one was what we dubbed RadioSEGA 6.5. You may wonder where version 5 went, but if you presume that MySEGA Radio was version 1, it makes sense :) 6.5, created to update the current design whilst a new site was being prepped, re-added blogs and updates to the homepage (a feature lost after 3.0) alongside something that was four years in the making: RadioSEGA LiVE.

Debuting with ResidentSD's SEGA AGES in March 2010, RadioSEGA LiVE finally added the last piece of the RadioSEGA puzzle: live broadcasting. Our live shows, alongside enhanced podcasts which allowed you to skip to your favourite parts of each show, have been an integral part of RadioSEGA's growth, and it was only a matter of time before the next evolution presented itself.

Enter: RadioSEGA 7 (also known as Project 7). Originally teased in October 2009, this design eventually saw the light of day one year ago. Alongside an improved audio stream, RS7 also brought show blogs, SEGA news and features to the table, as well as the recent acquisition of SEGA Media (more news on this soon, please bear with us).

So...there's a question begged to be asked: Where next? Well, I'd be lying if I said we weren't already looking. We want RadioSEGA 8, when we start on it, to blow RS7 out of the water. We're also looking at a couple of other ways in which you can view the site, thus meaning RadioSEGA really is a radio you can access anywhere.

I hope you've enjoyed this look back in time at the history of this station. We're using the entire month of March to have a birthday bash, so look out for more features and specials coming your way over the next couple of weeks. There's only one thing left to do: SING! Happy birthday to us, happy birthday to us...
