Streets of Reaper - Stage 0

Welcome to Streets of Reaper, a new RadioSEGA feature by our own Sound Reaper! Hit the jump to learn more about his experience with the beloved SEGA franchise.

Streets of Rage, even to this day, has been a most definitive Beat-Em-Up affinity for me (along with Final Fight and a few others).  Now I will share with you my own experiences with this trilogy, ranging far back from my childhood to today.  What’s more, are my experiences beyond the three games most have come to be familiar with. Fan-games, hacks, and campaigns for a fourth Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle game would also cross my path over the years and make me think about things differently as time moves forward.

As it should be obvious, Streets of Rage is only one of many fond memories I have had with Sega. However, I have decided to focus directly on the SOR franchise for now because of the interesting tidbits of discovery shaping my experiences with this franchise.  Without further ado….let us start, with my first actual playing experience…

That’s right, Streets of Rage 2 was my first game actually played. I was only… say, 6 years old when I played this game with an older cousin at someone else’s house. The first character I tried was Skate. Oh, how I loved to spam those jump kicks, he sounded cool doing them... until I lost a life from Donovan uppercutting me constantly. Hehe, those were the days indeed. And I never finished the game then either, but I somehow made it to stage 7 with me being the only one with a continue left. Maybe if I wasn’t so busy hitting everyone with a pipe (including Max, controlled by my cousin), things may have been different? Heh, who knows?

My next actual game-playing experience would actually be a bit crazier….

As it turns out, I got a chance to play this game shortly after on another day, same month though I’m sure which means all three games had came out before I got a chance to play any of them. I only had a SNES and Gameboy myself at the time, so there’s that XD. This time, I would play as Zan, and my older cousin choosing Axel, then Shiva (by using an in-game code of course). I would of course wind up playing as Roo on my second continue cause he was a hidden character I wanted to try (especially after freeing him in an earlier level). It was a fun experience and one of the several games along with many Genesis games I got to play that got me into wanting a Genesis of my own. I didn’t get to finish playing SOR3 at that time, but this would not be the end of my SOR experience.

So what about SOR1? Would I ever get to beat the games myself? Perhaps you shall find out in the next installment of…
