Streets of Reaper - Stage 1: Don't Go Straight!

Follow Sound Reaper as he carries on fighting through memory lane. Fighting in the Streets of Reaper...

Now, continuing on to my memories of this franchise, it would be another year from my very first experiences (discussed in the prologue), before I start having these games myself.  After what felt like forever, I finally got Streets of Rage 2 and Streets of Rage 1… in the form of: The Sega Genesis 6-Pak.

Ironically, my natural instinct was to play SOR2 again first, this time with Axel, with my older brother choosing Max. I was still player 2 though. Knowingly playing the game on Very Easy (and no cheats) was a bit more assuring than the first time I played. We only lost one continue a piece and the playthrough actually went kind of smooth considering our playing skill at the time. Funny thing is, after losing one continue by the time I reached stage 7-2, I only lost one more life fighting Shiva, and one more fighting Mr. X. We truly didn’t do too badly for our first play while owning the game.

My most hated Boss Fight moments were probably against Big Bear and Abedede (the wrestler). They both took annoying damage and were particularly devious since I didn’t know how to A-Counter potential throws and holds, so there was that… But somehow I still only lost one continue the whole time, so that says something I suppose.

Of course, now the time came to finally try our hands at playing Streets of Rage (amongst other starting SEGA games, and it was our first playing through of Sonic 1 on that same day via Genesis 6-Pak).  Naturally, we played the easy difficulty, and even then we learned how different SOR1 played from the other 2 games. It was definitely a very different experience than before.  My first character of choice was Axel with my older brother’s choice being Adam, and of course, he was player one heheh.

First instinct was to press the A-button to see how the specials were... resulting in wasting a police-call.  Afterwards, we knew what the deal was and knew what NOT to do, but still took getting used to. I hated not being able to jump-kick spam the SOR1 Zamza-like Boss because it was hard for me to hit him on ground.  Yes, I was guilty of jump kick spamming my way to level 2. XD  When met with the challenge of fighting the wrestler bosses, I was delighted when all it took to beat their sorry tales was…. a bunch of jump kicks. ;D  Dealing with the Y-Signal enemies in this game forced me to learn how to land on my feet, which would pay off later. While it only took 2 continues to get through the whole game, a new curiosity came up as we were met with an unfamiliar opportunity of “saying yes or no” to Mr. X at Stage 8.

Naturally, we both said no the first playthrough and got the initial ending for what it was worth, thus marking our complete SOR games to 2 (out of 3). It didn’t take long though for us to purposely try to see what would happen if one of us said yes and the other “no”. The result was a “fight to the death” between the both of us and purposely making the “yes” player win. As many of you know, continuing on with this route of sorts, earned us the “Bad Ending”. It was definitely different for us each way, in terms of how the game played, and what was possible. When it comes to Streets of Rage 3 though, and in terms of further gameplay, it yielded, other experiences most definitely.

From playing and beating SOR2 to purposely getting the Bad Ending in SOR1, it was a fun time as far as the active Streets of Rage gameplay experiences were concerned.

But soon, such experiences would take a turn for the serious….and for all the wrong reasons.

To be continued…
