Streets of Reaper - Stage 2: Victory Reverse!?

Sound Reaper is back on the streets fighting punks and racing against time. What adventures await him this time? Find out after the jump!

Even to this day, it amazes me to know my most favorite SOR game of the main 3 gave me so much dread.  What would surprise me more…is how I got my hands on a copy of this reasonably shifty title…?

By this time, the concept of cheat codes for games was no stranger to my brother and I, and no game would make us wish we had them (good ones hehe) than this game during the time period.  But before I get into that, let’s talk about how I actually got the game real quick ok?  We moved from an apartment to a small house with a basement recently at that time.  As it turned out though, that basement, through all improbability, contained over 20 abandoned Genesis games, amongst them, was…you guessed it, Streets of Rage 3.

While it was certainly one unique, happy moment of our childhood times, much would change for the likes of SOR3 when we played it for a while (kind of).  So let’s get to it!

To some relief, the game played more like SOR2 with some differences, like running and the special meter.  We picked up on that pretty quick, and we both knew how to A-cancel holds and land on our feet.  So we should be set to playing the game and beating it on our first run…on Easy difficulty, right?  RIGHT!?   Well… kind of…

As it turns out, we discovered this game had multiple endings and it was at least clear to us that playing on Easy wouldn’t cut it in terms of getting the best ending.  So, we tried the Normal difficulty, and we thought we stood a chance after having beaten SOR2’s Very Hard mode by this time.

…we were so very wrong

It’s a wonder how we got through Easy without noticing JUST how different this were from the other 2 games.  Basic mechanic changes aside, we noticed stuff such as: Donovans taking a 1/3 health worth of damage in a single combo, attack priorities completely changed (such as rush attacks having almost no priority at all), and a few more, decisive difficulties within the game.

Much to our dismay, by the time we reached Stage 6-1 on normal, we only had one continue and pretty much lost all remaining lives when the alarm went off and the poison gas sapped away our health.  My goodness were we helpless, not knowing what the hell to do, even after the cutscene going into the level.  So yes, lost…not once……BUT TWICE!  Oh never mind, 3 times.  Shall I break down the losses?  Of course I will ^_^   ( X_X )

1. As mentioned above….

2. Reaching Stage 6’s Boss Fight, and losing remaining lives

3. Even after getting a little better, and reaching stage 7-4, you just HAVE to know who was encountered…Robot Y, and oddly enough, he was beaten, but not in time…..

Yes, so many failures, playing Streets of Rage 3 became more a despair.  It was strange though, despite how much my brother and I lost, the unorthodox stigma of it being my favorite SOR title held on to me, perhaps BECAUSE of the challenge, and I was determined to beat this game the right way.

And so, it stands to reason that we had to get better………or cheat.  It seemed a little of both would have to happen.  It will soon be time to introduce to this franchise’s endeavor: codes, strategy, and getting even.  Prepare…

For the Age of Mania!!!

To be continued…
