It seems the Sonic 2 HD fan project has even more problems than we thought, as those who have installed the demo are being advised to remove the software due to the discovery of a keylogging program hidden within.
Edited on 11th April:
Sonic Retro have reported that the keylogger was actually a false positive, thus the Sonic 2 HD demo should definitley be safe after all and virus free.
The group surrounding the fan game are planning to continue on after removing the main programmer on the project, so do keep on supporting them!
Original Story:
The folks over at Sonic Retro have posted an announcement regarding these odd turn of events, with instructions on how to safely remove the Sonic 2 HD demo from your computer:
"You will need to delete the files included with the Sonic 2 HD zip, as well as the registry keys hooked at HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/NakaSMK (if you are unfamiliar on how to do this, go to Start->Run.., type regedit, follow the folder path, and then delete the NakaSMK folder.)"
It was only a few weeks ago that RadioSEGA reported on the release of this fan demo, a collaboration between members of the Sonic Retro community that had been in development for almost two years.
However, since the demo's release, there had been some controversy over its development, which some of our own community have discussed in our Sonic 2 HD thread over at the RadioSEGA.net Message Board. For some, the demo had been triggering virus protectors after installation... Well, now we know why!
According to Sonic Retro, the keylogger has not been active and does not appear to be transmitting any data as of yet, so don't panic too much, however If you've downloaded and installed the demo, it's better to be safe than sorry and remove the software as soon as you can.
Unfortunately, this does seem to be the end of a very promising fan project, but there are many other amazing Sonic fan games to be found elsewhere in the community.
Thanks to Sonic Retro for letting us know as soon as they could!
