SEGA To Sponsor 'Games Writer of the Year' Award At 2012 GMA's

The company will be supporting the newly-made category for the annual gaming-based event.

As reported by MCV, SEGA will be backing the new "Games Writer of the Year" award for this year's Games Media Awards. The award, making its introductory appearance this year, honors those with the skill in gaming journalism.

Nominations for this category can be from any post made since October 26th last year, and is open to all games journalists, which the site goes on to say either via by specialist, print or online. Entries can be sent in until Monday July 26th. Said nominations will then be anonymously judged by award-winning journalist and Guardian columnist, Tim Lott.

In addition, since SEGA is fully backing this category, the winner of this award will also be granted a special, free writing course with Lott as well!

Lott spoke on the matter saying, “It is encouraging to see excellence in writing supported in any field and Intent Media should be applauded in their efforts to raise the standards of journalism in gaming."

SEGA Europe's senior international PR manager Stefan McGarry also added:

“I’ve just got off the phone to an editor I’ve been working with for several years. Even on deadline he sounds as fresh and passionate about the work he does, month after month, year after year. This gives dinosaurs like me a lot of comfort. It’s not just the old guard, either, there’s a lot of talented new scribes coming through the ranks that are just as exciting to work with which gives me a lot of hope for the future of journalism in this wonderful industry we call home.

"It’s a pleasure to be sponsoring this award and I’ll happily raise a glass to whoever wins it.”

MCV's Managing Editor Lisa Carter added:

“The Games Writer of the Year award will be an incredibly prestigious accolade for the winner. We are looking to highlight excellence in games journalism and this award will be judged purely on prose...."

"And, thanks to the support of Sega, the winner will also receive a free creative writing course with Tim Lott. Pretty much every journalist has aspirations to be a novelist - and our Games Writer of the Year award will get the opportunity to learn from an award-winning author."

The 2012 Games Media Awards will happen on Thursday, October 18th and is to return to Vinopolis, Bankside.

SEGA's is being really supportive behind this and is willing to help out aspiring game journalists as well! What do you think should be nominated for this award, or any thoughts on the event in general? Let us know in the comments below or in our message boards!

Thanks to MCV for the info!
