Sonic CD: Temporal Duality Now Available For Download

OC ReMix's 45th album is now available!

The 45th album published by the guys at OverClocked ReMix is now available! It's called Temporal Duality and, as previously reported, is a tribute to Sonic the Hedgehog CD.

Temporal Duality features remixes from SuperiorX, halc, Sir Jordanius, Main Finger, our very own Rexy, and many more! It's a four discs work (yes, there's a bonus fourth disc!) that covers both soundtracks to one amazing Mega CD/SEGA CD game!

You can now head over to soniccd.ocremix.org to download it for free. However, while it downloads, why not read our exclusive interview with project director Matt Keller, aka SuperiorX?

RadioSEGA: What was the original idea behind making this Sonic CD tribute album?

SuperiorX: The idea actually arose while I was hosting The Sonic Zone Remix Competition on OC ReMix back in the summer 2012. Rexy first proposed the idea for a Sonic CD album that would cover both soundtracks, and sometime later that Autumn I ended up directing the project. Sonic is such a beloved games series too, so I really wanted to make sure we got a lot of talented musicians from all over the Sonic fan community involved so we'd do the soundtracks justice.

RS: Does Sonic CD have a special meaning to you, personally?

SX: Honestly I had never played Sonic CD until the 2011 re-release on PSN/XBL/Steam, because I never owned a Sega CD. The Sonic the Hedgehog series has always been very special to me though. Growing up my family had an NES, but when it came time for the next generation we decided to get a SEGA Genesis. The bundled game was, of course, the original Sonic the Hedgehog. From that moment on, I was hooked. I have many fond memories playing those games, especially Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and 3, with my family, and watching the 90’s Saturday morning Sonic cartoons. So Sonic was definitely a big part of my childhood. Regarding Sonic CD though, even though I hadn't played the game until a few years ago, I was familiar with the soundtracks and really loved both the JP and US versions.

RS: You know I have to ask you this: What is the better soundtrack? JPN or US?

SX: Heh heh, I had a feeling this question was going to come up! I don't necessarily think one is better than the other, because I think the two are so distinct and that each of them has something unique to offer. The JP soundtrack definitely has the more catchy tunes that you might associate with the classic Sonic games:  memorable melodies and a more upbeat, electronic feel. Whereas, the US soundtrack has a more atmospheric feel to it: a lot of organic instrumentation and lush textures that seem to fit the individual zones quite well. So, all in all, yeah I wouldn't necessarily say one is superior to the other, they each have their strong points.

RS:Any particular favourite track among the original soundtracks?

SX: Ooooh, another toughie... I love so many of the tracks, but if I had to pick just one then I'd say it's gotta be "Stardust Speedway JP".

RS: One of the things that makes this album stand out is the creation of the OverClocked Assembled. How was it to get together 8 artists in one song?

SX: Oh definitely. It was a blast! And the story behind the track is pretty interesting. As I mentioned, "Stardust Speedway JP" is my favorite track across both the OSTs, so I knew whoever ended up doing a remix of that source was really going to have to blow me away with an idea. Early on in the album's development DiGi Valentine, Kary Brown (begoma), and BrothaDom each individually contacted me with ideas for remixing Stardust Speedway in a funky hip-hop or R&B style. I immediately noticed the potential there for something great. The entire Sonic CD OST (particularly the JP/EU version) just oozes 90’s musical influences and already incorporated a lot of vocal elements into many of the sources, so I thought how awesome it would be to make a truly old-school collaborative hip-hop mix that sounded like it came right out of the early 90s! From there, I contacted Sir Jordanius to actually arrange the song, as I knew he had a penchant for making funk and hip-hop remixes. Along the way we pulled in metaphist & The Auracle to fill out our vocalists and also brought in C7 to add those awesome trumpet parts you hear in our track.

The actual process of working on the track was surprisingly seamless. Sir Jordanius did an amazing job laying out an arrangement and the two of us kind of jointly outlined the vision for the track. It made it pretty easy for the 4 vocalists to lay down their individual verses, which Jordan then mixed it, and then him and C7 filled out the arrangement with the additional horn parts and I added some piano and key parts. For such a large group of people, we worked together quite well. We've got a lot of other interesting ideas in store for you guys here in the future too... one of the overarching goals of OverClocked Assembled is to continue to promote hip-hop in video game music, so I'll just say if you guys liked our track on "Temporal Duality", then there is definitely more where that came from ;)

RS: Are there any plans to make a physical edition of the album?

SX: At the moment, no. Making physical editions of albums can get expensive, of course, and given that these are free video game remix arrangements, we are not able to sell physicals due to copyright laws. Many OCR albums have received limited physical runs in the past to hand out at conventions and whatnot though, so I won't rule out that it's a possibility, but there are no current plans.

RS: Anything you’d like to say to our listeners and members regarding Temporal Duality?

SX: Yeah, I'd just like to say what an honor it has been directing this project. I've had the privilege of meeting and working with so many insanely talented musicians and artists this past year. Just the level of dedication and quality each and every person brought to their tracks is amazing. I might be biased, but I really think people are going to love this album! I couldn't have done it without the help of our project staff either:  Phonetic Hero, Sir Jordanius, DiGi Valentine, Flexstyle, and Rexy all helped make this project a reality in various aspects. I also want to give a shout-out to our visual artist, TheSmai, who created the truly beautiful art you see accompanying the album. She completely exceeded my expectations! And of course, my sincere thanks to the original composers Masafumi Ogata, Naofumi Hataya, Spencer Nilsen, David Young, and Sterling Crew, who’s amazing work inspired us all to create this tribute album.

Spanning 3 discs, 38 tracks, and numerous musical genres, "Temporal Duality" truly has something for everyone and I hope every Sonic fan out there gives this album a listen and enjoys what we've created! We're making a Good Future up in here! :)
