Saturday Night SEGA

No SNS This Week

SNS is once again postponed - read on to find out more.

I'm starting this blog post with the intention of it being a short one. Whether or not it ends up being a short one, I actually have no idea. I guess we'll find out.

First off, I'd like to apologise for the short notice in cancelling both last week's and this week's edition of Saturday Night SEGA. Last week, I'd had quite a busy week with work commitments taking up the bulk of my time, and in the end I found that, if I had attempted to record an episode for Saturday evening, it would have been half arsed and, quite frankly, not very enjoyable for me to record or for you to listen to.

This week, it's a completely different story. Earlier this week, I forget exactly when, I was ready to just call it quits, see the year out and take a third, and final, retirement from broadcasting. For the record, I haven't told anybody this. I felt creatively jaded, and had the impression that I had now both achieved what I wanted to achieve in hitting the 200 episodes mark, and also felt that I had overstayed my welcome. SEGATHON 3, in particular, is something that I should be looking back on with great pride and yet, more often than not, I'm having to stop myself from thinking that it was a massive disappointment, and that after promising myself so much, I fell so short. I know I shouldn't be feeling this way, but here I am.

I also know, given the benefit of time to sit and really think about what's going on in my head, that it's not time to go. Not yet. In 2013 I told myself it was the right time, and came back 2 months later. After GLiTCH I told myself it was the right time, and came back in December. This time, I want to be sure. I want to be sure that, whilst I will undoubtedly miss the buzz of broadcasting live to the tens of people who tune in around the world (and the God-knows-how-many who download the podcast), I won't be tempted to come back.

It's an honour that this kid from Grantham, England - a place nobody has ever heard of - is heard as far afield as Portugal, USA, South Africa, Brazil and more. It honestly brings a tear to my eye to think that I'm a part of your lives in such a minor little way for 2 hours a week, and it's that feeling that tells me, in my heart of hearts, that it's not time to go.

Regardless, I'm still missing something creatively, and for that reason I'm postponing Saturday Night SEGA for another week. I've been listening to the Sonic Generations soundtrack for the past three days trying to find something to spark my mind, and I feel like I'm getting there - I just feel like Saturday will get there first. As before, I'd rather there be no show at all compared to a half arsed one.

Then again, SNS always has been half arsed, in a way, hasn't it? When you get right down to it, every other show on RadioSEGA has a point, a theme, an identity. Some shows have special guests, some have competitions, some have massive fanbases that you can guarantee will always be there. SNS, in comparison, is just a rambling, incoherent mess that is largely the same week in, week out. Fat surprise I can't figure out what the show description for iTunes should be most weeks.

Yet, that's what people seem to love about it. SNS has become RadioSEGA's old, worn-out pair of slippers; you know you should get rid of them, but you can't because they're your favourite. SNS will never have a theme, it'll never have massive competitions where you can win stuff that SEGA or affiliates have sent in (mainly because I'm jealous of you guys and quite often want to try and keep it for myself - hey, no harm in honesty)! SNS will never have special guests outside of my closest friends - Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have some, but it's not the right fit. SNS is...well, SNS. Has been for the past 5 years.

Next week, SNS is back live. I may or may not be in the right frame of mind to do a show then either, but live shows are a completely different animal to pre-recorded ones, as I have you guys, my audience, behind my back and ready to lift me up, so we'll give it a go and see where we end up.

Thank you all for reading this. I hope it made sense - it did in my head when I was writing and rewriting it. Enjoy the rest of your week, and the weekend, and I'll see you all next Saturday. In the meantime, if you want to chat, hit me on Twitter.

Huh. Not such a short blog after all...
